Coffee is Uganda’s leading export earner, grown by millions of farmers across the country. We majorly produce Robusta coffee and Arabica coffee at high altitudes. However, climate change is heavily affecting coffee farming in Uganda, coffee farmers are struggling with unpredictable rains, long dry spells, higher temperatures which increase water stress on coffee plants and is also shrinking arabica coffee growing zones. Climate change also has a direct effect on coffee yields as these harsh weather conditions cause coffee trees to prematurely drop leaves and have poorly filled coffee cherries, causing major yield losses. Warmer weather conditions also increase pest and disease infestation in coffee.
As we look at interventions on how to improve resilience of coffee farmers to climate change, one key cost-effective strategy that can easily be adopted by small holder farmers who are the majority and by all coffee farmers in general would be producing and promoting drought tolerant coffee planting materials.
Coffee trees are native to Uganda and grew wild in Uganda’s forests for centuries and organized commercial farming and plantations began in the early 1900s’. This shows that Uganda has a rich and diverse scope of coffee planting materials.
While we wait on the National Coffee research Institute (NaCORI) to develop for us more drought tolerant coffee planting materials, we could still look carefully at what is already available for us as coffee farmers.
Robusta coffee is native to Uganda and if we looked carefully at our robustas we would definitely easily identify/select drought tolerant coffee trees, non-native arabica coffee varieties were introduced in Uganda in the 1900s’ but Uganda a country gifted by nature does not only have two coffee types and our search for drought tolerant coffee planting material can not be limited to these two coffee types.
Outside the well-known Arabica and Robusta coffee types, Uganda also has Liberica coffee the third most commercially important coffee species (Coffea liberica). Botanically, Liberica coffee is generally classified into two main varieties: Coffea liberica var. liberica and Coffea liberica var. dewevrei, widely known as Excelsa. The two main cousins(varieties) Liberica Coffee and Excelsa Coffee are many times not differentiated. In Uganda we use a general name “Kisansa” to identify these coffees it’s however important that we understand their differences. Though Excelsa’s is classified as a variety of liberica, there are key differences between the two for example shape of the beans among others. Excelsa was initially thought a separate species of the genus Coffea until 2006 that it was reclassified as the dewevrei genus of the Liberica species.
Liberica coffee is emerging as a strategically important alternative to Arabica and Robusta not just because of the need to diversify premium coffee sources but in the context of climate change. While the robusta plant is very robust, it is shallow-rooted, making it particularly susceptible to extreme weather and root disease. On the other hand, Liberica has a much more extensive root system, where it penetrates much deeper, hence making it a much more drought tolerant coffee type. Liberica's extensive root system makes cultivation possible on almost any soil condition.
In the climate change conversation, Liberica coffee is not only important as a stand-alone drought tolerant coffee type but can also be used to improve the drought tolerance of Robusta and Coffee seedlings when used as grafting rootstock. This is because its roots grow faster and are more resistant to certain coffee diseases and pests. Liberica coffee is therefore a very important coffee type in the process of raising drought tolerant coffee planting material.
At Heritage Kanaani Farms, we established Liberica coffee demonstration gardens and have been researching on these advantages of Liberica Coffee for four years now and how this unique coffee can be incorporated in our robusta and arabica coffee production systems. From our preliminary assessment there is definitely a lot we can achieve in regard to climate change resilience if we further explore liberica coffee a “climate smart coffee tree”.
